About Me

I have  aspirations of gigging in my own one man band show some day.   For 2o10 my short term goals are to write several Boogie Woogie songs and cut my first CD before 2011.  I also hope to post some free online lessons on this site as well as some pay for digital download play Boogie style on the piano lessons.

Before January 2009 I had no previous musical background to speak of.  That’s when I decided to have a go at learning to play keyboard.   I’ve found I like learning those old pop songs of the 70 and 80′s I once danced to in the clubs. I also like visiting local clubs in the Toledo Ohio area to hear bands especially if they have a keyboardist in the group.  I’ll be blogging about some of the bands and musicians I come across.

I don’t know exactly what drew me to it but I’ve developed a liking for Boogie and Blues piano type songs.   Thus I’ve selected the stage name Boogie Beau.   I’ve been learning how to play using Blues/Boogie style piano lessons.   Examples of boogie woogie piano playing are everywhere it seems on the Internet.   Also  I’ve purchased some online lessons, music theory books and have like 1000 bookmarks in my Internet browser to music sites on the net.    I’ll be blogging about some of the lesson books I’m using and Internet sites I frequent.

At age 59 I’ll never be a great keyboard player but I’ll have fun trying and pretending I am.   Being retired I have time to do things I always wanted to do when I was younger but found no time to do them.   Playing music was high on my list and now I’m on my way. I have a great keyboard rig set up you can read about on My Rig  page.

    Hello Beau!

Nice setup and info on your page. Thanks for responding to my questions on the Yahoo group. After looking at your rig, I may have questions about additional equipment. First one that comes to mind is, what additional pedals did you find most useful for your Roland Juno Stage?

    Thanks again!

    Pedals ….
The damper pedal Roland DP-10 .. usually I only used for holding a chord at end of a song then I reach up and turn volume control down to fade out if need be. I’ve no volume pedal. I use the Roland EV-5 to start and stop drum machine in the Stage. Since I’m just a pretend one man band act at the moment that works out great for me and makes practicing with a drum beat easy. I’ve programmed in several drum patterns of my own. I have a BOSS FS-6 I used to start stop a BOSS DR 880 drum/bass machine which I’m really growing fond of. The PK-5A bass pedal unit I’m just starting on and I can see my left foot will need like a year of training before much happens on that thing. Though I’m starting to find I can do some other things besides bass notes on the PK-5A. The big thing with the Stage is spliting the keyboard. I have PK-5A set to channel 3 for Bass, channel 1 my left hand, channel 2 right hand, channel 4 right , channel 10 the Stage drum machine. Even if using one patch I’ll have channel 2 with set to the same patch and upper keys with a louder volume.
